UMC Update: Increases for EVERYONE!

Thursday, November 3, more than fifty members attended our sixth bargaining session with UMC. Our bargaining team addressed UMC Management, including UMC CEO Brian Branmann directly and frankly regarding how they are implementing wage increases at UMC. All UMC SEIU members should be proud of our bargaining team, particularly Pat Moore who spoke from the heart in explaining how UMC staff perceive these actions:

UMC is a big hospital with dozens of classifications and each one is as important as the next. There should be no weight given of one over the other, but your unilateral decision has only made matters worse. Shame on you for doing that.Pat Moore

SEIU wants increases for EVERYONE. Our Union has been fighting all along for better wages for all workers at UMC, BOTH NURSES AND ANCILLARY. UMC Management appears to have a strategy of doling out increases a little at a time and while they say it’s not their intent to create a divide at UMC, our bargaining team let them know, THAT’S EXACTLY WHAT THEY’RE DOING. But our team also proposed a solution:

We’re not asking you, nor would we ever propose taking those increases away, now that you’ve given certain people a raise, but since you made this decision unilaterally, the wedge is getting deeper and deeper at the hospital. The solution is, we all need to be compensated equally. Therefore any raises given to nurses, needs to be given to all other classifications. – Pat Moore

We’re not letting UMC Management off-the-hook for the actions they have taken. More than fifty members showed up to let management know we are strong and stand unified.
