SEIU Nevada Protests Gibbons’ Veto of the Budget
Las Vegas – On Friday SEIU Nevada members and staff joined with workers, teachers, nurses, parents, and seniors to say “no” to Gibbons’ veto.
Nevada Gov. Jim Gibbons vetoed the state budget and a revenue package proposed by legislators Thursday evening. The budget he vetoed includes significantly fewer cuts to education, and health care for children and seniors, than Gibbons’ proposed budget.
“Gibbons’ budget would damage Nevada’s future for years to come,” said Al Martinez, SEIU Local 1107 President. “It is a drastic proposal that would hurt our children. Nevada can do better.”
Gibbons’ proposed cuts would potentially close major programs at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas and University of Nevada, Reno, shut down community colleges, slash salaries for teachers and cap the number of low-income children who can get health insurance.
Other groups in attendance included American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO), Nevada Parent Teacher Association, SheetMetal Workers, Progressive Leadership Alliance of Nevada, and American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME).
